At first Six Feet Under was a side project of Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes. It became a full-time band for him after he was fired from the 'main' band in 1995.
While early Cannibal Corpse was known for its fast and technical death metal, Six Feet Under leans toward mid-tempo death metal with groovier rhythms, somewhat reminiscent of Obituary. Which suits my taste well. In fact, the original guitarist of Six Feet Under was a former member of Obituary, which probably explains part of that similarity.
Barnes, who wrote plenty of gory lyrics for Cannibal Corpse, carried on with the same themes in Six Feet Under. The band has released fourteen albums to date, but I have to admit I stopped following them regularly after Bringer of Blood in 2003. What can I say — there are too many bands and too little time. Still, I often return to their earlier material, especially Warpath and Bringer of Blood.
