Sepultura is a band from Brazil and they've been around for +40 years.
The 1st album I heard from them was Beneath the Remains, released in 1989. This too was introduced to me by my crew mate Tango. But the time I actually heard it must have been late 1990 or early 1991, since it wasn’t long until they released Arise. And that album was a game changer! I liked some tunes from Beneath the Remains, but I wasn’t totally sold on them yet. Arise, though, was something else: an eloquent mix of death and thrash metal, with super catchy riffs, even more extreme vocals — nearly growls — and a few videos rotating on Headbangers Ball. Today the album doesn’t feel that extreme, but I still love the sound and the atmosphere of it.
It didn’t take long after that until I got my hands (or ears) on the actual representatives of the death metal genre. Next in line were Obituary, Carcass, Entombed and Deicide.
