Obituary. They’re among the very first, actual death metal bands I ever heard.
To this day I’m not sure which came first — Obituary or Entombed. But it was in 1991. In this case Obituary has to win, since the very first album I heard from them was Cause of Death (1990), while the first Entombed record I heard was Clandestine (late 1991). Anyway, what really struck me about them was the mid-tempo death metal and the unique vocal style of John Tardy. Sometimes Tardy’s growls sound more like a weird instrument than human-made words. Or as Wikipedia puts it, “senseless gurgles.” What I also appreciate is that Obituary are still active today, regularly releasing stellar albums and performing live.
In 2015 I painted a series of various band names that performed at Nosturi, a venue in Helsinki (FI). Obituary being one of these bands. So, here’s my version of their name, based on the color scheme of their World Demise album.
