Entombed is a truly legendary band from Sweden. Along with Dismember, Grave, and Unleashed, they are often referred to as one of the “big four” of Swedish death metal.
Ever since I first heard Entombed’s second album Clandestine, I was hooked. I remember that my crew mate Rosk was also very much into Clandestine, although he lost interest an album or two after that. Whereas Dams really dug Entombed’s later Death ‘n’ Roll approach.
My personal favorites from Entombed band are the unholy trinity from 1991–1997: Clandestine, Wolverine Blues, and To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth. Sure, they’ve released quite a few killer albums after, but these are the ones that mean the most to me. Although I gotta admit that the opening track from their debut Left Hand Path, as well as Chief Rebel Angel from Morning Star, also rank high among my favorites.
Even back in the ’90s I was already writing down many of their quotes, and at least once I painted an actual “Entombed” piece together with Dams. And in 2015 when I had an exhibition as a part of Art Goes Kapakka festival, I painted an Entombed canvas (now in the possession of their ex-bassist Jörgen Sandström).
Entombed is also the band I’ve witnessed live the most so far — with Finnish band Velcra coming in a very close second. It seems like a lot of great bands come from Sweden — pop, rock, metal… there must be something in the air or water.
