Carcass is a grindcore, then death metal and after 1993 “just” a metal band from the United Kingdom.
My crew mate Tango introduced them to me in late 1991, when he got their then brand-new album Necroticism in his hands. Back in 1991–1992 we were discovering so many new bands while also putting a lot of focus on learning to paint graffiti, so naturally I didn’t have time to dive into all the new music at once. So I really started devouring Carcass more seriously in early 1992.
Their first album didn’t quite do the trick for me, but Symphonies of Sickness (1989) and Necroticism (1991) are both excellent. I also enjoyed their later albums, which leaned more toward heavy metal than death metal. The band quit in 1996 but in 2007 made a long-waited comeback and have even released two albums since. The current version of Carcass plays a mix of grind and death metal, so in a way they’ve returned to their roots.
